Your birth will not define you, but it will bring you much understanding about yourself. It may not appear to be transformative but it is. Being “maternal” is part of who we all are, always. It is a human instinct to want to protect and nurture those who cannot do so for themselves. There is a tenderness that is expressed when we look into our baby´s eyes. It moves us in ways that few things can. Our body´s movements in response to our baby movements tells us about our own experience with nurturing. There is indeed an openness or sensitivity during pregnancy and postpartum to feel things more acutely and sense things more clearly than at other times in our lives. And this facilitates an encounter with a depth of knowing that is there to guide us. We want to surround ourselves with good intentions and positive supportive people during this period of learning, who inspire us to understand ourselves better, who allow ourselves to be just as we are and who reflect in us our own innate ability to make good choices.
You always have a choice.
Sometimes you just need more information, more community or more confidence to act on it.
